Keeping
up the Line
Aside from the four best of Troy's descendents as broodmare sire, several
others are worth a mention. The year 1996 in particular was a spectacularly
successful one for the descendents of Troy as, aside from Ragmar's Prix du
Jockey Club, Pilsudski's Breeders' Cup Triumph and Fastness' second win in
the Eddie Read Handicap, several others were making their mark around the
world.
- Helen of Spain (Soviet Star - Port
Helene) won the Prix de Pomone in France.
- Midnight Legend (Night Shift - Myth) carried on winning, winning two listed races in the
UK
- Helsinki (Machiavellian - Helen
Street) became Helen Street's first black-type foal.
- Desert Boy (Green Desert - City
Fortress), a half-brother to Fastness, won a Group race
but was disqualified; later on that year running in Hong Kong under the name Oriental Express, he won the local Derby.
In previous years, descendents of Troy had also made their mark:
- Group 1 Winners
- Steamer Duck (Bering - Lavender
Mist) (Gr. 1 Italian Grand Criterium), and now a promising young sire in Italy, having got Janestra (2nd Italian Oaks) from his first crop.
- Unaware (Northern Guest - Hidden
Warning) won the Grade 1 Germiston November Handicap in
South Africa.
- Group 2/3 Winners
- Spartan Shareef (Shareef Dancer - Spartan
Helen)
- On Tiptoes (Shareef Dancer - Pennyweight) took the Queen Mary Stakes (Gr. 3) as a 2-y-o
and continued winning stakes races until the age of 4. She is now the dam of Caballero (c 1996 by Cadeaux Genereux), a useful sprinter in England this year.
- Glowing Ardour (Dancing Brave - Cocotte) a half sister to Pilsudski, won the Silken
Glider Stakes (Gr. 3)
- Break Bread (Bering - Troyanna,
picture top of page) took the Prix la Force (Gr. 3) in 1992 and
looked to be a contender for the French Derby, although he never
actually recaptured that form again.
- Lucky Guest (Be My Guest - Gay
Fantasy, closely related to Pelder) won several Listed
races in Europe and the Grade 2 Topkapi Trophy in Turkey.
