America's best miler of 96
Like Pilsudski, another horse out of a
Troy mare to do well in his later years was Fastness, who blossomed on his transfer to the
USA after the end of his four-year-old season.
At two he won a listed race in France and was highly regarded; however his career at
three left a little to be desired, with a couple of group places to his name but nothing
more. Hence he was transferred to the States, where at last he began to show the ability
his trainer had always suspected was there.
At five Fastness won the Grade 1 Eddie Read Handicap, and he repeated that performance
as a six-year old under the care of Jeanine Fahadi. Unfortunately he damaged a tendon
badly after that race and had to be retired, and he now stands at stud in the USA. It will
be interesting to see how he fares there as his bloodlines provide a complete outcross for
the prevalent Norther Dancer and Raise A Native strains.
