Troy's
Daughters
Although he only sired a small number of foals, many of Troy's fillies were above
average in racing ability and also out of very well-bred mares, so they were bound to be
in demand as broodmares. In addition Troy's own sire Petingo was a notable broodmare sire.
The promise of his dughters on the track has indeed been translated into their success
at stud and Troy mares have produced a number of top performers from a relatively small
broodmare band. Undoubtedly the best of them so far is Pilsudski, out of the Group-placed
Cocotte, who improved markedly from three to four ending the 1996 season with a win in the
Breeders' Cup Turf, one of the richest and best turf races in the world. In 1997 he has
continued his successes with wind in the Eclipse Stakes and Champion Stakes, though a
much-desired win the the Prix de l'Arc de Triomphe yet again eluded him.
Others of note include Oath, winner of the 1999 Epsom Derby, 20 years after his grandsire's victory,
Fastness, a top miler in the States in 1996, Italian Champion
Pelder and Group 1 winner Steamer Duck. A full summary of the successes of his daughters
as broodmares will be coming shortly to these pages.
Finally success for descendents of Troy was also to be found in an
unusual region - Russia. The Russian racing scene was scaled down quite
considerably in the decade after Glasnost, but it has begun slowly to
recover and the Russian Derby is being held at its original location of
Moscow Hippodrome again from 2000. However in the past few years a
descendent of Troy has been making his presence felt, both as a runner -
winning the Russian Derby, and as a sire. This is Enterprise (Damister - Intrinsic
by Troy) sometimes also known as Enterprise Ru. His progeny have been
winning all manner of big races in Russia and he is set to found a good
line there.
