Quotes from Racehorses of 1979's Comments
"The two-hundredth Derby differed from almost all its recent
predecessors in that it did turn out to be the most significant horse race
of the year in Europe. With its first prize boosted considerably to £15380,
a record for a race in Europe, the Derby produced from the winner Troy a
performance of outstanding merit by Classic standards. Seldom has there been
a more emphatic Derby winner; in the last twenty-five runnings of the Derby
only Sea-Bird's effortless victory has made a more favourable impression on
us. Troy was magnificent on Derby Day; at the time, it seemed likely that
there had arrived on the racing scene one of the best racehorses in modern
times, in all probability a European champion to rank with Mill Reef,
Nijinsky and Alleged, in our opinion the best twelve furlong horses of the
decade. Troy went on to take the Irish Sweeps Derby, the King George VI and
Queen Elizabeth Diamond Stakes and the Benson and Hedges Gold Cup... "
"Troy acted on any going and was genuine and
consistent. He was, in our view, without question Europe's Horse of the
Year."
