The First Inkling of A Good Horse...

'Glorious Goodwood' Meeting Comments
Sir Michael Sobell and Dick Hern had seen an even better reason
to look at the future with optimism when, on the Thursday, Troy won the Lanson Champagne
Stakes (7f). As I've said before, Troy is a big, still immature colt by Petingo, whose six
winning half-brothers include Washington International winner Admetus.
As in both his two previous races he took quite a while to get into the swing of things
at Goodwood and as Saracen Prince turned downhill for home in front, Willie Carson was
already scrubbing Troy along.
But that is how Willlie likes it. The motionless superiority of Lester Piggott is not
for him and, however far from home he starts to ride, I never remember him looking even
slightly tired before the finish.
Now there was no chance of that, because well before the furlong pole Troy found his
full stride, and it was the others who began to struggle.
Ela-mana Mou did best of them but the further they went the further Troy won.
When he grows in full to his massive frame he will be a formidable specimen and Dick
Hern, who plans to rest him now, will give him every chance. Troy will then be trained far
one of the big Autumn two-year-old races, probably the Dewhurst.
